If you believe the gospel of the great poet laureate A$AP Rocky *rolls eyes* then if you’re a black woman of a non-fair complexion than a red pout is an absolute no-go. The Harlem rapper recently broke it down this way to The Coveteur;
“But for real, for me, I feel like with the red lipstick thing it all depends on the complexion. I’m just being for real. You have to be fair skinned to get away with that.”
So is Mr. Rocky correct? Is red lipstick reserved for the Raven Symone’s of the world? Or do brown skinned beauties like myself make this notion a myth?
I have to cry foul on this one, I’m a loyal lover of MAC’s Ruby Woo even though I was once personally scolded by a complete stranger for wearing it. (-_-)
Below are women who are far from fair and still look stellar with red lips.
Don’t you agree? –Danni
Obviously false, as shown by your pictures. Plus I wear red lipsticks sometimes….if I’m in the mood.
I can’t believe some punk thought they were within their rights to scold you for rocking a red lip. I am trying to understand why it is so impossible for people to believe that black women, with deeper skin, can’t rock a bright lip. I think it definetly connects to shadeism and this idea that the darker you are the lesser you are. So it is no coincidence that those who are “fairer,” a word which I don’t use for obvious reasons, are within their ~rights~ to wear a red lip. Sorry no. That red lip looks iconic on you. Keep rocking it sis.
